Cortinarius balteatus Fr. subgenus Phlegmacium Cap 4-12cm across, convex, margin involute; hazel to foxy brown, violet especially near the margin; sticky only at first, then dry and shiny. Gills adnate; whitish cream then buff. Stem 40-70 x 20-40mm, base often swollen; white, but with ochre veil remnants around the base. Flesh white. Odor mild, musty. Taste mild. Spores almond-shaped, warty, 10-12 x 5.5-7µ, quotient 1.75. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in conifer woods, or with huckleberries or blueberries. Vaccinium - rather rare. Found in northeastern North America, Colorado, and the Pacific Northwest and Europe. Season September-October. Not edible.
